What would Jackie do?
Well, she's good at throwing parties! So, why not? One of the
best was last summer, August 28th to be exact, at the Seattle Mariners Safeco Field. Of
course, this was with the (not insignificant) help of both the
Seattle Mariners and Safeco Insurance, the company who sponsored
the event and earned their way into the event's title: "Safeco
Presents Savvy Girls Day at the Park." I also showed up to lend
a hand. Jackie put me on pencil sharpening detail. I keep trying
to tell my dad that all the money he spent on my college
education led to this day, but I'm not sure he believes me. And
I broke the electric sharpener.
There were more than 300 women at the event (a couple men tried to
sneak in, too, but we had big, burly bouncers show them the beer
garden across the street) and more than 700 tickets were sold to our
specially priced Savvy Section. Women lined up early to get into
the event and as a bonus for their planning, they were rewarded
with a $5 Mariners gift card (to the first 100), care of our savvy
sponsor, Safeco Insurance. Then the Mariner Moose made an
appearance and took pictures with the kids and, from what I saw,
suffered the occasional pat on the behind.
Our emcee was Rebecca Hale, the
Mariners' Director of Public Information (known to many of us as
the team spokeswoman) who kept the program going and made
everyone feel comfy. Gregg Greene, Director of Marketing for the
Mariners, kept us calm. Our featured speakers this year
were Amy Affeld, director of programming for Fox Sports Net
Northwest and Tery Ibanez, wife of Mariner outfielder Raul
Ibanez. And who can forget Teri Lucie Thompson, VP of Marketing
at Safeco, who wrote a light poem about our endeavor getting
this book published. It was a tearjerker. Well, to me and Jackie
it was. Thanks, Teri.
And, what's a party without prizes and party favors?! Safeco
Insurance supplied a grand Grand Prize, which was two tickets
for eight lucky ladies to have a hosted party in the Safeco suite.
The party was the Saturday, 9/29, game against Texas. Jackie and I
were there,
too!
And Jackie was pleased to see that
there weren't any Mariners Memory Scorebooks left on the ground
at the end of the night. I swore to her that if I saw one laying
on the ground, I'd sweep it up before she ever knew. I didn't
even have to do that! These books were developed by the
two of us, designed by the Mariners and sponsored by Safeco. The book
went to the first 7,000 women who
entered the stadium. Haven't you preordered your own Savvy Girls edition?
Do so
right now! You'll get it just in time to give them away as Christmas
presents. This book will be a great companion to our Savvy Girls
book, available in the Spring.
AND WE'RE KEEPING OUR EYE ON THE
FUTURE
These are some other things coming down the pike:
1) Can you say "book tour?" that's right, chances are if you
live near a MLB city, we'll be heading your way in for our
Summer '08 Savvy Tour. We're working with other teams RIGHT NOW. We'd love your ideas for bookstores to
contact for signings, restaurants to contact about local
parties. Maybe even suggestions on where to stay... your place?!
How sweet!
2) It's never too early to think "spring training!" Ok,
it's impossible to table our excitement about touring Florida and Arizona
with our new book. And is it ever too early to start thinking
about which sunglasses to wear after Christmas? Not for Deidre.
It's not breaking news, after all, that Deidre's always a year
behind the fashion curve.
