April 9th Game Recap
Our planning for this day started months ago and wouldn’t be possible without thanks to many, many people. Our Chariot
Any savvy day starts with packing up the MG! On the way to Safeco Field, Deidre and Jackie had the thrill of listening to the interview that Deidre had taped an hour earlier with KOMO Radio’s Tom Hutylor, host of “Mariner’s Magazine.” We were so excited that Deidre could hardly drive - though it looked much like her regular driving. The Calm
Before anyone showed up, we enjoyed a peaceful drink at the Azteca Caliente Corner across from the Home Plate entrance to the stadium. Deidre and Jackie handed out tickets, scarves, surveys and a brief excerpt from our book. The Storm
What a blast! As expected, these sixty women came from diverse backgrounds — suburbanites, working mothers, girlfriends, stay-at-home moms, grandmothers, retirees and single women. Ages varied from 18 months to about 70 years and they all contributed to make a thoroughly enjoyable day for everyone. Surprisingly, the stadium was pretty empty but we were told that our group was visible from across the ballpark. We all accessorized with apricot-nectar-mango colored scarves, which Deidre and Jackie slaved over with a pair of scissors and gin and tonics. Fashion aside, it was a tough game and looked bleak for the home team until a four-run rally in the bottom of the 8th inning energized the crowd. But the clouds started closing in…literally and figuratively. As the rains came and the roof started to close, our hopes were dashed when the Mariners displayed questionable defense in the top of the 9th inning. After having 2 RBI in the eighth, Bret Boone allowed a routine grounder to slip between his legs and into right field. The Rangers capitalized by jamming closer Guardado with two two-run homers to take the lead. The bottom of the ninth showed promise but ended quickly when an eager Adrian Beltre flew out to center field, leaving runners on first and third, and fans with a heartbreaking loss. Alas, it’s a long season and well…..we had fun, anyway. Those who filled out surveys at the game gave themselves inventive “baseball nicknames” such as “Boomer,” “Swingin’ Sue,” “Yogini,” and “The Avenger.” Of the respondents, most said that they would like to come to another game and want to be keep up-to-date on our project via e-mail. The vast majority also want to become members of this group. Deidre and Jackie will endeavor to find out what that means and come up with something before too long. Some suggested a Spring Training tour package with the Savvy Girls, receiving tickets and more event information. Guess we’ll also be signing a lot of books for these women as almost all want a copy of our book. Awwwww. How thoughtful! Now, that’s something we can handle. Enjoy more pictures of our day at the park . . . and if this looks like fun, check out our recap of the the August 27th game! Thanks for your support!!!
