OH, WHATTA NIGHT!
Seattle, WA
May 6, 2006

The day started when the “Evening Magazine” van pulled up to Deidre's house. (Well, it really started with me scraping eggs off of the kitchen floor after the kids finished breakfast but let’s stay glamorous, OK?)  Deidre got a lump in her throat and Jackie stepped up to the plate, embraced her inner geek and snapped pictures of the van. KING-TVs Eric and Darrel interviewed us in the backyard during a brief, albeit chilly, sunbreak and then took some photos of memorabilia.  Next, it was getting everything loaded into the car, where they filmed us driving away with the top down in Deidre's aqua blue MGB. Who cares that it was freezing? Can you say photo-op.  Hollywood, baby.

When we got to the stadium, the receptionist greeted us with “You must be the Savvy Girls!”  Boy, did we feel like celebrities! Or, maybe she was tipped off by our Savvy Girls t-shirts?  By 4:30 the Mariners interview room was bustling with women from the ages of 5 to 75 sipping wine, soda and snacking on some good treats.  We heard from Mariners executives Rebecca Hale and Ingrid Russell-Narcisse and then Shannon Drayer who is the Mariners Reporter for KOMO 1000.  The team's director of marketing, Gregg Greene, even made a cameo appearance.  And the Moose.

We really didn't expect to have KING TV camera and the Fox Sports Northwest TV crew in our faces until about the 7th inning of the game. The hardest part was that, even though the shows were taped, we had to be smart on camera and think fast. Oh, and smile! We never should have had a glass of wine – it made the smiling easy but not the thinking.

Fortunately, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer sent along its gumshoe reporter, Athima Chansanchai to talk with us and the other revelers at the reception, which started two hours before game time. There were lots of kids there including a girls softball team and Deidre's daughter Amelia, who, in a fluke of party planning, won the random drawing for a signed copy PI Columnist Art Thiel's baseball book, Out of Left Field.  Oops.  (And she's still bragging about it!)

After the party, Deidre and Jackie joined by many of the group in the terrace by our section for a Scoring Clinic.  The game went fast, thanks to Joel Pineiro retiring 17 batters in a row.

Well, not sure how it happened but not only did Deidre show up without her wallet, she also neglected to put batteries in the camera (those who know her well or have followed our Spring Training exploits are not surprised by any of this...) While Jackie and other friends covered Deidre's, er, "expenses," more urgent is the matter of having no pictures of the event.  We know some savvy chick out there was taking lots of photos.  Please send us your best shots and they will become part of the Savvy Girls archive.  We'll give proper credit where due...

Please join us later in the season for a couple other casual events during the year.  We'll keep you posted and please drop us a line when you get the chance.

Meanwhile, enjoy a picture of the two of us working hard, planning the May 6th event.  At least it looks like Jackie is working hard... Hey!  Haven't I seen that umbrella before?
